TV’s biggest night went on without a hitch Sunday in downtown Los Angeles and the host-less evening included a few historical moments. The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards recognized TV’s elites in writing, directing and acting.
Jharrel Jerome took home a well-deserved award for Lead Actor In A Limited Series for his role in ’When They See Us.’ Jerome portrayal of Korey Wise, who’s one of five juvenile males of color who were wrongly convicted in the 1989 Central Park jogger case, and his performance was nothing short of exceptional. The star made history as the youngest person to win an Emmy in this category as well as the first Afro-Latino to win for acting.
In his acceptance speech, Jerome dedicated his Emmy to the five men — Wise, Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana and Kevin Richardson, who were in attendance and seen on camera cheering and giving a standing ovation to the actor.
Billy Porter, who plays the stylishness and confident ballroom emcee Pray Tell in FX’s “Pose,” also made Emmy history Sunday night by becoming the first openly gay black man to win the lead actor in a drama category.
