Jhene Aiko Opens Up About How Her Relationship With Big Sean Began: “He Wanted to Take Me Out on a Date. I Had a Boyfriend, But I Still Went Just As A Friend”

Last week, Jhene Aiko completed a promo run in London for her newest album, ‘Trip’. While in the U.K., the singer stopped by ‘1Xtra Breakfast Show with Dotty,’ a popular radio show on the overseas network, BBC Radio.⠀⠀

During the interview, Aiko discussed how her and rapper bae, #BigSean became the couple we know them as today, past relationships, motherhood, and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“The year that my brother passed, I had just met him[Big Sean],” she explained “And we worked on “Beware” and “I’m Gonna Be”. He wanted to take me out on a date. I had a boyfriend, but I still went…just as a friend.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Sparks began to fly when their friendship began back in 2012, despite Jhene already being in a relationship.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“I mean, I had never been courtside to a game,” she jokingly added. “And he’s cool. So, I told my boyfriend I’m gonna go to this game.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Many believed that Aiko broke up with her boyfriend to pursue a relationship with Sean, but according to Jhene, their relationship was practically done before Sean even came into the picture.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Aiko’s then-boyfriend was secretly married to his baby mama (yikes!), and that’s what led to their split.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Timing played a huge role in the couple finally becoming a union.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“When I came around and was like, let’s see what he’s [Sean] talking about,” said Aiko. “He.. got a girlfriend. I took too long.”

The two were playing relationship tag with one another for a while.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

All’s well that ends well though, because their stars finally aligned, and now the couple can’t seem to be able to get enough of one another.
