A letter written by Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, Cathriona White, recently surfaced amid the wrongful death legal battle against the actor.
Back in 2015, White committed suicide. In turn, her estranged husband, Mark Burton, and her mother, Brigid Sweetman, filed a suit against Carrey, accusing the actor of using a fake name to obtain the drugs White used to take her life. In the suit, the two claim Carrey gave White the drugs despite his knowledge of her depression and previous suicide attempts. In addition, they say Carrey gave White “three STDs without warning her.”
Now, amidst the ongoing suit, the unearthed letter claims Carrey introduced White to “cocaine, prostitutes, mental abuse and disease.”
“You have not thought about the stigma I have to live with for the rest of my life, you have not apologized or once asked is there something you can do to make it better or even felt bad for it,” White allegedly wrote in the 2013 letter. “This is what I want, you gave me hsv and hpv, I want you to apologize for it because you care enough to. I want you to understand that however little a thing that seems to you, it ruins a girls life.”
“Before you I might not have had very much but I had respect, I was a happy person, I loved life, I was confident and I felt good in my skin and was proud of most decisions I made. I met you, you introduced me to cocaine, prostitutes, mental abuse and disease,” she continued. “You did good things for me but being with you broke me down as a person Jim.”
However, Carrey’s attorney told PEOPLE that the note just further proves that White was trying to extort money from him.
“This note helps establish the evidence that this was pure fraud, and that [White], her lawyers and other were trying to establish a basis for Jim into ultimately settling with her based on these false claims,” Ray Boucher said. “This was part of her and her lawyers campaign to extort money from Jim and ultimately he succumbed.”
According to PEOPLE, Carrey also released a statement, saying “Unfortunately, I made the mistake three years ago of giving in and settling false claims made against me by Mr. Marchino, on behalf of Cat, as mounting a public defense is a very costly and painful process.
“At the time I felt Cat was being exploited by Marchino [Filippo Marchino, White’s attorney]. Since this new case was filed, I have discovered the depth of deception behind those false claims, the kind of deception decent people fall for, because to us, such behavior is unimaginable.
“I will not give in a second time to these same fraudulent charges initiated by Cat’s husband in name but not substance Mark Burton, and her estranged mother. Nor am I responsible for what these desperate characters have inadvertently unearthed about the woman I adored. I was clearly blinded by my affection. Regardless, I will hold a place of empathy, and forgiveness for Cat and continue to focus on the many blessings in this life.”
In turn, Burton, Marchino and Sweetman’s attorney Michael Avenatti told PEOLE, “Jim Carrey is so desperate to avoid the public knowing the truth about his own outrageous conduct, that he has now resorted to outlandish accusations against innocent people. As his interview from a few weeks ago shows, the guy is incoherent and unhinged. He needs help.”
