Job Interview Dos & Don't To Secure The Bag In 2023

Each year millions of high schoolers and college grads exit their academic careers and embark on their professional career journeys. Whether you’re vying for a gig as an attorney or with a janitorial company, your interview is your opportunity to make a lasting impression on future employers.

Though many people may have years of interview experience under their belts, some are brand new to the process, which is perfectly fine. However, it is vital that you school yourself on proper interview etiquette. After all, there’s nothing worse than fumbling a job over minor nuances that could’ve been corrected before you ever walked into the building.

Have no fear. Baller Alert is here to help with a few tips for securing your next dream job.

Lose the Arrogance

While most employers look for potential workers who are sure of themselves and their capabilities, always ensure that this confidence does not come off as arrogance. Refrain from saying “I know that already” or appearing above training because of skills you already possess. Every job has unique programs and methods specific to them, so despite being familiar with the position, no one likes a know-it-all. You never want the interviewer to feel that you are “too good” for the role to which you applied.

Easy On the Fragrances

For that long-awaited interview, consider going light on the colognes and perfumes. Some lotions emit strong scents as well, which may be distracting. Employers value good grooming habits, but remember that the person you are initially meeting with may be distracted or even allergic to overpowering smells. You want the attention to be on you and not the Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue that you’ve doused yourself in.

Be On Time

This should go without saying, but there are many people who simply do not possess the gift of punctuality. It is always a good idea to search the location of the interview days ahead to get a clear picture of how long it’ll take you to commute there. With this in mind, leave at least an hour ahead of your scheduled time. Depending on how far the location is from your home, an even earlier leave time may be necessary. This extra wiggle room is just in the event of traffic jams, car accidents, refueling, or any other unexpected hurdle that may arise on your drive.

Never Talk Bad About Past Employers

We understand you may not have had the best experience with your previous employer, hence why you’re going on job interviews in the first place. However, it leaves a bad taste in interviewers’ mouths when potential new hires talk poorly about former bosses. If you’re asked why you’re no longer employed with a past job, always stick with a neutral answer alluding to wanting a career change or new interests that align with the current company you are applying for. Pretty much any wording aside from “my boss was an insufferable a**hole” will suffice.

Whether this is your first job or fifth, a successful interview will make the difference between an offer and a rejection letter. Always remember to remain calm, be polite, express interest, and for the love of God, arrive on time.

You got this.
