After winning his first gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, NBA star Joel Embiid took time to return to his native country of Cameroon. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Embiid is fully embracing his role as an ambassador for his homeland.
This week, Embiid and Toronto Raptors General Manager Masai Ujiri had dinner with Bloomberg and other prominent leaders in New York City. They discussed their roles as influential African leaders.
Yesterday in New York, Embiid spoke at the Earthshot Prize ceremony, where he highlighted the potential impact his homeland could have on sports, given the right support and timeline. The Earthshot Prize rewards five environmentalists with financial contributions to further their causes.
Embiid will soon head to the Bahamas with his 76ers teammates to prepare for the 2025 NBA season, but it’s important that he continues his philanthropic efforts as well. Huge expectations are on the Philadelphia 76ers after they extended Embiid and point guard Tyrese Maxey, and signed swing forward Paul George.
The “City of Brotherly Love” has clearly influenced Embiid. With the positive energy from this summer and early fall, the hope is that it will propel the team into a successful start to the NBA season in a few months.
