John Legend says he parted ways from his friendship with Kanye West over the rapper’s support of Donald Trump.
Politics and where you stand on social issues can be a dealbreaker for some relationships. That seems to have been the case for former music pals, Kanye West and John Legend. During an interview with The Axe Files podcast, Legend opened up about his decision to cut ties with West over the rapper’s admiration and support of Trump.
After Trump came into the political atmosphere, Legend says he and West’s relationship dissipated over time.
“We aren’t friends as much as we used to be,” said Legend to CNN’s David Axelrod. “I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump. I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship.”
While West was sporting Trump’s MAGA hat, Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen were blasting the former president over his offensive and disruptive behavior.
“He was upset that I didn’t support his run for presidency of the United States of America — for understandable reasons,” Legend went on. “I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he was not happy about that. And we really haven’t been close since then.”
