On a recent episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, R&B singer Jon B revealed he has never received a check for his records.
Jon sat down with Joe, Ish and Parks and spoke openly about his music career and how he makes his money. Surprisingly, the “Someone To Love” singer explained that most of his profit comes from shows and not his actual songs.
“We gotta work some things out,” Jon said, adding that it has been nearly 25 years later, and he still hadn’t “been paid” for his records.
When asked by Budden, “You haven’t been paid for what records?” the singer replied, “For any of my records.”
“What… shut up man,” Budden responded in disbelief. “Jon B, I will walk out of this room.”
Jon B admitted that he was signed to a bad record deal while being signed with Babyface’s Personal Edmonds Record Group, but the producer immediately rejected the claim, saying, “I find it really saddening that Jon would let someone run with this false narrative. Just gonna say that Jon was never signed to me personally or my label. All I did was write songs and try to help.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the singer said he wrote 100% of his records, and while he gets some kind of publishing profits, “it’s not what it needs to be.”
Jon B went on to say it was the fine print of his deal that caused the mess. But now he’s hopeful that everything will come full circle.
