A Tennessee judge is going viral after audio surfaced of the public official claiming black men are more effective at killing other black Americans than the KKK.
According to Newsweek, the incident occurred on Thursday in a preliminary hearing for the trial of Vincent Bryant Merriweather, who is facing homicide charges in the murder of 22-year-old Antorius Gallion.
During his remarks, General Sessions Judge Wayne Shelton said, “I grew up in a time where people wore white robes and they shot at black people. And now we see young black men wearing black hoodies shooting at black men – and doing much more effective job than the Klan ever thought about doing.”
According to reports, Merriweather, and two other suspects, were involved in an exchange of gunfire with the 22-year-old victim after a dispute at a local high school game. Witnesses say the violence erupted after Merriweather’s feet brushed against Gallion’s in the stands, which led to a stare down between the two.
As things escalated, both parties exchanged gunfire from their cars, and Gallion was unfortunately shot in the head.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As for Shelton, this isn’t his first time referencing black on black crime. Back in 2015, after a Clarksville man was shot and killed after a high school party, Shelton said, “What a horrible tragedy this is. Black lives matter.”
“The Klan doesn’t exist anymore,” he said. “Who doesn’t care about black lives now? I’ll let you answer that. I’m tired of black men killing black men. If I offended anyone…I can’t help it.”
At the time, according to Newsweek, Shelton also revealed that he is not “the whitest man in the room” because his distant relatives were freemen of color, his “great-great-great-grandfather” to be exact.
