Jussie Smollett will have to go to trial after asking a judge to dismiss his criminal case.
The dismissal is the latest update in Smollett’s drama stemming from his highly publicized hoax. If you recall, the actor claimed that two white men attacked him in January 2019 in downtown Chicago. The “Empire” star told authorities that the men hurled racial slurs at him before striking him in the face, pouring chemicals on him, and placing a noose around his neck.
Investigators found that Smollet was lying about his account and had staged the entire incident. Smollett asked a judge to throw out the case in a last-ditch effort, as he has already performed community service and paid a $10,000 bond under his previous deal with Cook County prosecutors.
However, Judge James Linn stated that Smollett’s case was led by a special prosecutor appointed to the case by another judge. Therefore, he will honor this arrangement and move forward with Smollett’s trial for lying to the police.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin on November 29th.
