Justin Timberlake has finally responded to fan pressure after the release of FX’s new documentary, “Framing Britney Spears,” offering an apology.
Many fans called Timberlake out for his role in the sexism and misogyny that derailed Britney Spear’s career and mental wellness and his treatment of Janet Jackson after their 2004 Super bowl performance–which led to Jackson’s career derailment as well.
According to Variety, Timberlake took to his social media accounts to post an apology to both women.
“I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns, and I want to respond,” he wrote. “I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.”
Timberlake continued, “I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually because I care for and respect these women, and I know I failed.”
ney Spears for three years in the early 2000s, and the pair enjoyed media and fan success as a popstar power couple. But when their relationship ended, Timberlake used the breakup to vilify Spears, painting her as a “slut” and a “cheater,” which led her to experience severe backlash from their fans and media alike.
Timberlake released his infamous “Cry me a River” video about a cheating lover and even used a Britney look-a-like in the video to shame her publicly.
Then in 2004, Timberlake performed in the Halftime Show at the XXXVIII Super Bowl with Janet Jackson, where he infamously ripped off a portion of Jackson’s top that revealed her nipple.
After that performance and its subsequent fallout, Jackson was made to take the sole blame and was forced to apologize. At the same time, Timberlake cowardly avoided any responsibility and became an industry darling.
