On Wednesday, the *NSYNC frontman lit up the stage to celebrate the grand opening of Fontainebleau Las Vegas. During the hour-long set, Timberlake officially broke his silence about his past relationship with the Toxic singer.
“No disrespect,” Timberlake said as he prepared to perform his 2002 hit, “Cry Me A River,” seemingly acknowledging the backlash that followed the release of Spears’ memoir, The Woman In Me.
In her book, the pop star opened up about her past relationship with Timberlake and how the fallout of their breakup, including allegations of infidelity, affected her—the two dated from 1999 to 2002.
“I felt there was no way at the time to tell my side of the story,” Britney wrote, according to PEOPLE. ” I couldn’t explain because I knew no one would take my side once Justin had convinced the world of his version. I don’t think Justin realized the power he had in shaming me. I don’t think he understands to this day.”
Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” was released as the second single of his debut solo album. While the song alludes to cheating, the music video also features an actress who resembles Britney as well, further fueling rumors of infidelity.
But after the release of Britney’s book, where she described being villainized and depicted as a “harlot” in their split, fans called out Timberlake for his behavior and treatment of the Pop Princess.
But now, there are no hard feelings on Timberlake’s end. However, it remains to be seen if and when Britney will respond.
