A JetBlue flight attendant who was held up in Jamaica after what she claims was a false positive COVID-19 diagnosis will finally be free to leave the country today but not without controversy.
According to The Jamaica Observer, the woman named Kalina Collier went as far as faking an abduction and posting videos on social media claiming to be in distress as she waited out her mandatory 14-day quarantine in her hotel room.
The Observer claims Collier used social media to plead to influencers and celebrities like Amanda Seales, to convince them that she was being held against her will in Jamaica due to a false positive COVID-19 test result. Many Jamaican media outlets claim Collier tested positive twice when she was expected to depart the island, but she maintained the test results were wrong.
Collier arrived in Jamaica with a group of friends on January 28th and was scheduled to depart on February 1st. On January 30th, however, Collier did an antigen test that returned a positive result and took a second test an hour later- that was negative.
Because of the conflicting test results, the Ministry of Health and Wellness recommended she take a PCR test on February 2, which yielded a positive result. She was therefore ordered to stay in Jamaica to quarantine for 14 days.
The Ocean Coral Spring hotel, where Collier was staying, even offered to have her stay for her quarantine period at no extra cost, instead of transferring her to a government facility, but Collier was reportedly extremely unhappy with being told she could not leave.
Collier allegedly concocted a story about being kidnapped, held hostage, trafficked, and threatened to destroy the resort’s reputation in a series of videos that garnered more than 100,000 views.
“For one, she is not missing; she is safe and is being extended all the courtesies of the hotel team. She receives room service daily for all meals; and has direct contact with the medical provider in resort – Hospiten; and she has contact with the local public-health representative for Trelawny,” Tanesha Clarke, director of sales at the Ocean Coral, told The Jamaica Gleaner.
Jamaican officials claim Collier reportedly refused to take down her videos or retract her allegations. Instead, she opted to remove her Instagram profile altogether and only did so after her employer, JetBlue, intervened.
