Vice President Kamala Harris just made it official: she’s not running for governor of California in 2026.
In a statement posted to her Instagram on July 30, Harris addressed the speculation head-on, revealing that after months of reflection, she’s decided to step away from elected office—for now.
“After deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” she wrote.
The Vice President, whose roots in California run deep—from her time as San Francisco DA to Attorney General and U.S. Senator—made it clear this wasn’t an easy decision. She spoke passionately about her love for the state, her history serving its people, and the weight of deciding what role she wants to play moving forward in American politics.
But make no mistake—Kamala’s not going anywhere.
She made it clear that she’s still committed to fighting for democracy, opportunity, and justice—just not from a governor’s seat. Instead, she plans to hit the ground supporting Democratic candidates across the country and stay involved in shaping the direction of the nation.
“For now, my leadership—and public service—will not be in elected office,” Harris stated. “But I will remain in that fight.”
She also didn’t hold back in critiquing the current state of politics, calling out how institutions have failed many Americans and saying it’s time for fresh ideas, bold leadership, and new approaches that aren’t stuck in the past.
The announcement came with two slides on Instagram, where Harris laid out her gratitude, her concerns, and her hope for what comes next.
