Kandi Burruss Reveals She Penned Destiny’s Childs’ “Bills, Bills, Bills” About an Ex Who Was Dating a Member of the Group

Kandi Burruss is a multi-hyphenate celebrity best known as a member of 90’s R&B girl group “Xscape” and “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Still, she is also a brilliant songwriter responsible for co-writing hit anthems like TLC’s “Scrubs” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills.

Burruss sat down with Glamour magazine to discuss the inspiration behind five songs she’s written, co-written, or performed and shared a funny story about DC’s hit.

The 45-year-old revealed that her real-life relationships inspired her to write “Scrubs”  and “Bills, Bills, Bills.”

“I use a lot of my past relationships as inspiration. The relationship I had been in prior to [writing the song], I took inspiration from it…though I didn’t tell them that,” Burruss explained.

“Now, this is the really funny part: One of the girls that was in the group was dating my ex at the time. So I didn’t tell them that some of the lyrics in there were inspired by him. The part that was a clear inspiration—using my phone and pretending like he didn’t use it, driving my car and not putting any gas in it—that was real stuff that had happened to me!,” she said before noting “But I won’t tell you who from the group was dating my ex.”
