Jay Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne album debuted in 2011. It was highly acclaimed with a flawless roll out that managed to keep the album from being leaked prematurely. As flawless as the album’s rollout was, the accompanying tour was just as amazing. Fans couldn’t wait for the album’s sequel and even at one point, Kanye hinted it was coming. Now, according to the ChiTown rapper, it won’t be happening any time soon.
During the Seattle Saint Pablo Tour stop Wednesday night, Kanye West in true Kanye West fashion, had a lot to get off his chest. One of the subjects he spoke on was music politics and Watch The Throne 2.
“It’ll never be a Watch The Throne 2,” said Kanye. “You know why? That’s the reason I wasn’t on the song. I wasn’t on the song because of Hov. Because of this TIDAL vs. Apple bullshit. This shit gets me tight every time I perform this motherfucker. Ya’ll didn’t get what ya’ll were supposed to get with me and Drake on this song because of Tidal/Apple bullshit.”
The song in question is “Pop Style,” which appears on Drake’s Views album. The original song, which Drake leaked via his OVO Radio show on Apple Music, featured Kanye West and Jay Z. However, by the time the album came out, Jay and Ye were nowhere to be found. Kanye blames Jay and Drake’s brand exclusivities for the reason he and Jay Z weren’t on “Pop Style” and the reason he and Jay Z will never do another Watch The Throne album.
But there’s more…
Kanye West says that Tidal vs. Apple wasn’t the only reason Jay Z snatched his verse from the Drake album. According to Kanye, he was with Jay when Drake sent the track over to him. The two buds were freestyling when Jay thought of a couple lines and Kanye insisted he throw it on the song. In a previous interview with Zane Lowe, Drake corroborates this story, saying that Jay Z wasn’t initially intended for the song and it was Kanye that made him get on.
“Then Jay thought about it and out of respect for Meek Mill he didn’t want to be on the track,” Kanye stated. “I said, look, I’ll call Drake, I’ll call Meek, we gotta squash this shit. We gotta let people have this song!”
Meek Mill is also signed to Roc Nation, which further explains Jay Z’s loyalty to him. Kanye capped his rant by saying, “I can’t take this shit, bruh!”
Back in September Kanye West confirmed that he and Drake are working on a joint album. Watch The Throne fans will just have to get their fix from there.
