Kate Spade Was Extremely Depressed Dealing With Issues With Her Business and Separation From Her Husband

On Tuesday, iconic fashion designer #KateSpade committed suicide inside her Park Avenue condo in New York City. Although Spade’s sudden death shocked the world, it came as no surprise to her sister Reta Saffo, as she revealed Spade suffered from years of debilitating depression. 

“I will say this was not unexpected by me,” Saffo said. “She was always a very excitable little girl and I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive.” But, according to Saffo, she refused to get medical help. 

Instead, she coped with alcohol. According to TMZ, Spade’s husband, Andy told police that his wife “was drinking a lot” dealing with her business problems and their separation. In fact, in her last days, Spade slipped into a deep depression over the fact that her husband wanted a divorce.

The two had been living separately for a couple of months, but Spade was not ready to give up on her marriage. Although further details remain unclear, recent developments about Spade’s marital issues may be linked to Spade’s suicide note, where she tells her teenage daughter it was not her fault, but to “Ask Daddy!”
