Keke Palmer has been a force to be reckoned with since her introduction to the world in 2004. Now, nearly twenty years later, the 30-year-old is a “Big Boss,” walking in her power, with a new baby, new body, and new outlook on life, especially concerning her child’s safety.
Last week, Palmer was granted temporary sole physical and legal custody of her 8-month-old son, Leodis, as well as a restraining order against her child’s father, Darius Jackson. The actress detailed a cycle of abuse throughout their two-year relationship that included “love-bombing” and instances of physical violence.
The petition included photo evidence of two separate assaults, with one occurring as recently as November 5th, which seemed to be the last straw for Palmer. According to PEOPLE, the actress tried “hard to have an amicable split,” but at the end of the day, she “did what she had to do” to protect herself and her son.
According to court documents, the couple called it quits in October after months of speculation in the wake of Jackson’s Twitter outburst over Usher. But still, sources say, Keke tried her best to maintain a good co-parenting relationship for their son.
“She gave him a lot of chances to do the right thing,” a source told PEOPLE. “Keke tried so hard to have an amicable split and arrangement [custody].”
“She needed to prioritize her safety and the safety of her baby,” they continued. “She wants the best for Leo. She did not want it to get to this point. But she did what she had to do.”
Jackson has been ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Palmer and Leo, as well as any school or childcare facilities he may attend. In addition, Jackson will not be allowed visitation.
A hearing has been set for December 5th to determine if the temporary order will be permanent.
