Today, we celebrate the birthday of singer and songwriter Kelis, and she is still the goat.
The superstar behind “Bossy,” “Get Along With You,” and several smash singles has reinvented herself throughout the years. Her impact on music has been felt since the release of her debut album, “Kaleidoscope,” in 1999. Many of Kelis’ peers have long recognized her work, with musicians from Doja Cat to Beyonce sampling her records.
Thanks to “Kaleidoscope,” the industry was introduced to a refreshing blend of R&B, hip-hop, and pop. The lead single, “Caught Out There,” became a women empowerment anthem with its unforgettable hook, “I hate you so much right now!” From there, Kelis released “Wanderland” in 2001 and album number three, “Tasty.” The 2003 project delivered the decision, “Milkshake,” which quickly became a generational staple
Her impeccable sense of style has also influenced many. Known for bold choices, such as her green wedding dress at her 2005 wedding to rapper Nas, the New Yorker’s fashion choices are still praised today.
While the 45-year-old still appreciates her musical roots, she turned her attention to the food industry. After graduating from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu culinary school, the singer introduced her sauce line, Feast. Now a farmer, Kelis has grown her Bounty & Full company, which specializes in organic wellness products and seasonings, all from her gardens.
As we celebrate Kelis’s birthday, here are a few tracks to add to your playlist.
