Kelly Rowland is standing behind Jay-Z and his criticism of the Recording Academy.Â
The former Destiny’s Child star weighed on Jay’s viral Dr. Dre Global Impact Award acceptance speech, where he called out the award showing for never honoring Beyonce with Album of the Year.
“I couldn’t be more proud of him, and I’m just really happy for a lot of things that he said. I think that he made a lot of artists feel very seen and very heard in those minutes that he took on stage,” Rowland said during a Tuesday chat with Entertainment Tonight.
Jay caused a wave of discussion when he spoke out about his wife never winning the Grammy’s top honor despite winning 32 awards. Bey is now the most awarded musician in Grammy history, though she has lost in the AOTY category several times. Most notably, her “Renaissance” album lost during last year’s ceremony to Harry Styles “Harry’s House.” While Jay didn’t call out any names during his speech, he made it known that he was speaking about Bey, with the camera even panning to her on several occasions.Â
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammy’s than anyone and never won Album of the Year. So, even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that- the most Grammys never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work,” he stated.
Rowland hopes that by Jay taking a stance, there can be some change within the Recording Academy in regard to how artists are awarded.Â
