Wednesday marked the highly anticipated testimony of Kelsey Harris in the explosive Tory Lanez trial, and her time on the stand left many questions unanswered.
Initially, the prosecution expected Harris to pinpoint Lanez as the person who shot her former friend Megan Thee Stallion. However, when she arrived with her attorney, Daniel Nardoni, Harris changed course. After consulting with Judge Herriford and Naedoni, the influencer decided she wanted to invoke her Fifth Amendment and wasn’t interested in testifying until she was assured she would be granted immunity for her testimony.
Once on the stand, her statements seemed to be all over the place. Harris verified that she began dating Lanez but learned that Megan had also been hooking up with him during the fateful argument that led up to the shooting. She called the notion that she shot Meg “ridiculous” but would not directly say whether or not Lanez threatened anyone with a gun and also wouldn’t tell whether or not she witnessed Lanez shoot the Houston rapper. Harris previously told investigators in a September 2022 interview that Lanez had threatened her and admitted he was the shooter but claimed she lied to protect herself. From what exactly remains unknown. While being questioned, Harris continued to stay silent regarding critical details and even claimed to be suffering from postpartum depression, which was affecting her ability to be mentally present.
The prosecution presented text messages from Harris immediately following the July 2020 shooting, pleading for help and stating that “Tory shot Meg.” Despite this, she would not directly admit to seeing Lanez shoot the 300 Entertainment star while under oath and would not confirm that the Grammy-award-winner was shot at all. During that statement just three months ago, Harris told the District Attorney’s office that Lanez fired five shots at Meg’s feet.
As her first day of testimony came to a close, Harris affirmed that the Canadian singer offered to pay her lawyer fees but said she couldn’t remember whether or not he did.
Lanez’s defense will continue to argue that Harris shot her friend in a jealous rage after discovering her relationship with the crooner. Harris is expected to return to the stand for cross-examination on Thursday.
