Kennedy Center Cancels LGBTQ Chorus Performance Amid Trump’s Takeover

Another event at the Kennedy Center has been scrapped, amid Donald Trump’s hostile takeover.

The Kennedy Center abruptly canceled a planned performance featuring the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, citing financial constraints and scheduling conflicts. The chorus, a historic LGBTQ choral organization, had been scheduled to perform with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in May as part of Washington’s WorldPride festival.

“We are deeply disappointed with the news,” the chorus said. “We believe in the power of music to educate and uplift, to foster love, understanding, and community, and we regret that this opportunity has been taken away.”

The cancellation came just days after Trump removed the Kennedy Center’s board and appointed himself as chair. The performance, “A Peacock Among Pigeons: Celebrating 50 Years of Pride,” disappeared from the center’s website, The Advocate confirmed.

Trump claimed on Truth Social that his takeover was motivated by a past drag performance at the venue, labeling such shows “anti-American propaganda.”

He appointed Richard Grenell as executive director, the first openly gay Cabinet member under his previous administration.

Jean Davidson, NSO’s executive director, insisted the cancellation was planned before Trump’s intervention.

“Program changes are common,” she said, explaining that “The Wizard of Oz” was selected as a replacement.

The chorus, however, remains steadfast. “We will continue to sing and raise our voices for equality,” they vowed.

Entertainers such as Issa Rae, Ben Folds, and Shonda Rhimes have since cut ties with the Kennedy Center in protest of Trump’s actions.
