Tuesday morning Kenneth Walker sat with Gayle King on CBS This Morning in a full interview to discuss the details of what happened the night of Breonna Taylor’s death.
In the beginning of the interview Kenneth talked about how the night was a regular night for them. But it all took a turn when they were watching a movie and they heard a loud knocking at the door.
Police had come to Taylor’s apartment looking for her ex-boyfriend who allegedly had drugs and money but they found nothing in the home.
Walker said that he and Breonna both asked who was there but he said, “I’m a million percent sure nobody identified themselves.”
Gayle asked Walker, “who did you think was at the door?” He said he “didn’t have a clue who was at the door.” He added, “Why would I think it’s the police, they have no reason to be coming here.”
He said, “that’s why I grabbed my gun, Didn’t have a clue.” He added, “I mean, if it was the police at the door, and they just said, ‘We’re the police,’ me or Breonna didn’t have a reason at all not to open the door to see what they wanted.”
Moments later Walker says he fired his legally registered gun after the police busted through the door.
Louisville Officer Jonathan Mattingly fired six shots, officer Myles Cosgrove fired 16 shots, and detective Brett Hanikson fired 10.
In the middle of the gunfire, Walker says he believes this is when he realized Taylor was shot. He said he was holding her hand when she screamed. “She was just scared,” he said. After gunfire had stopped, Walker called his mother, who told him to call 911.
the conversation between the 911 operator and Walker went like this: Operator: “911 operator Harris where is your emergency ? “ Walker: “I don’t know what is happening, somebody kicked in the door and shot my girlfriend.” At this time Walker still didn’t know that it was the police at his door.
The operator continues, “where was she shot at?” Walker replies, “ I don’t know, she’s on the ground right now, I don’t know.” Operator, “is she alert and able to talk?” Walker, “no she’s not, oh my god.”
The body cam footage that was released showed what happened next. The police did a walk through of the home without even acknowledging Taylor’s body.
Walker was then taken outside where he was arrested. One of the officers asked him if he was hit by any bullets and said that’s unfortunate, when Walker told him no.
Officers dragged Walker to the back of the squad car. Once they drove off he said he realized that they had pulled over and two other cars pulled up, one that was unmarked.
The officer in the unmarked car approached him with an entirely different tone. Walker said the officer told him that this was all a misunderstanding and was asked if he needed anything.
When Walker arrived at the police station he said that he wasn’t handcuffed and that he was able to walk around freely.
Later, he was formally arrested and sent to jail, where he heard of the news that Taylor was dead.
At the end of the interview, Walker told Gayle that he wanted the world to know that he loved Taylor and she meant the world to him.
He said, “To the world she’s just a hashtag, a picture and all that, but to me it was much more. More than a girlfriend too, I think that’s what I want the world to know the most. That was my best friend.”
King asked, “ that was your best friend?”
“Easy,” he said “The most important person to me pretty much on earth and they took her.”
