The Kenosha Police Department, whose cops shot Jacob Blake seven times in front of his kids, has a record of misconduct and has killed four people in the last 17 years.
According to court documents, the Kenosha Police Department in Wisconsin has been sued multiple times for using excessive force, with one incident including a traffic stop that ended in the death of a man.
This comes as Blake, an unarmed Black man, and father-of-three, was captured on camera, getting shot in the back by officers as he tried to get into his car.
According to reports, Blake is in stable condition but is paralyzed from the waist down. The cop who pulled the trigger has yet to be identified.
Wisconsin’s state Division of Criminal Investigation is now looking into the case, but this isn’t the first time the Kenosha Police Department has come under fire.
In 2005, the department was sued by the family of Michael Bell, who is white, for his wrongful death while he was in police custody.
Bell, 21, was pulled over for running a stop sign, which escalated into him being held on the ground, while cops kicked him, tased him, and shot him in the head.
His family said in court documents that everything happened in front of his mother and sister, and after four years in court, the city of Kenosha settled out of court with the family for $2 million.
In 2015, an officer shot and killed Aaron Siler, 26, after cops tried to arrest him for violating probation. This led to a car chase and foot chase before Siler was shot six times.
Last year, Ernest Quintero sued the department because officers allegedly broke down his door without a warrant over a domestic disturbance.
Quintero claimed the officers “slammed” his head into a door frame and beat him unconscious. He was left needing 10 stitches. The case is ongoing, and Quintero is seeking $100,000 in damages.
