Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency early this morning after a deadly tornado ripped through the state resulting in at least 50 fatalities.
In a letter to President Biden, the Governor asked for federal assistance, citing a “significant loss of life.”Â
“This has been one of the toughest nights in Kentucky’s history, with multiple counties impacted and a significant loss of life,” Beshear shared in a tweet along with his letter to the President.
“I request that you declare an emergency disaster for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in response to a severe weather system that has produced numerous tornadoes,” Beshear in the letter.
The Governor also stated that the massive amounts of debris in the wake of the fatal tornado make it extremely difficult for search and rescue efforts.
The Kentucky National Guard has already been deployed to support and assist the communities impacted by the devastating storm.
