On Wednesday, a Kentucky lawmaker committed suicide amid the allegations of sexual assault of a teenager.
Reports surfaced earlier this week, accusing Rep. Dan Johnson of sexually assaulting a woman when she was just 17-years-old. The incident occurred in Johnson’s apartment underneath the local fellowship hall. The victim said she was sleeping over Johnson’s house with his daughter when Johnson came in late from a party. She told officials that he was drunk, so she helped him navigate the stairs. However, during that time, Johnson reportedly slipped his hand down her shirt. Hours later, when the woman woke up, she found Johnson on his knees in front of her. She said he then forcibly kissed her and groped her.
One day after the allegations were published by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, Johnson told reporters that the allegations were “totally false,” however, many still called for his resignation, which he refused.
The next day, Johnson took to his Facebook account to explain how the allegations had taken a toll on his mental state, again denying that the claims are true.
“The accusations from NPR are false GOD and only GOD knows the truth, nothing is the way they make it out to be. America will not survive this type of judge and jury fake news. Conservatives take a stand. I LOVE GOD and I LOVE MY WIFE, who is the best WIFE in the world, My LOVE Forever!” he wrote. “My Mom and Dad my FAMILY and all five of my kids and Nine grandchildren two in tummies and many more to come each of you or a total gift from GOD stay strong, REBECCA needs YOU. 9-11-2001 NYC/WTC, PTSD 24/7 16 years is a sickness that will take my life, I cannot handle it any longer. It has won this life. But heaven is my home.”
Hours later, Johnson’s body was found in a riverbank near a bridge in Mt. Washington. Officials say he shot himself in an apparent suicide. He was 57.
