A Kentucky mother is facing murder charges after killing her two young sons.
A neighbor discovered the woman’s six-year-old and nine-year-old son with gunshot wounds inside their Shepherdsville home after sensing something wasn’t right.
Authorities responded to the home around 11 a.m. Wednesday. The mother, Tiffanie Lucas, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths, PEOPLE reported.
An arrest report obtained by several local news stations says a witness told police she went inside the house and found the boys in a bedroom. A gun, believed to be the murder weapon, was also found on a bed.
The children were transported to a nearby hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. Authorities have not released their names and investigation is ongoing.
“At this time, it appears all parties in relation to this incident have been accounted for and there is no threat to the community,” the release states.
Lucas was previously convicted of drug possession and spent one month in jail, WLKY reported.
“Whether you think it’s mental illness, just pure evil, a combination of both, it could be substance abuse, any combination thereof,” Col. Alex Payne, Chief Deputy of the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office, told the outlet. “Pick your poison. None of it’s good. The result is horrific.”
Lucas was booked at the Bullitt County Detention Center, and is being held on a $2 million bond, WAVE reports.
A judge reportedly entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf.
