The governor of Nairobi, Kenya, has angered some of the public and has since gone viral on social media amid the backlash. This was after announcing that he will be adding small bottles of Hennessy to food packs that will be handed out to the city’s most impoverished families in need due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Governor Mike Sonko announced his plans this past Tuesday during a media briefing, “From the research which has been conducted by World Health Organization (WHO) and various health organizations, it has been revealed that alcohol plays a very major role in killing the coronavirus or any sort of virus,” Sonko said in a clip that was later tweeted by Citizen TV Kenya.
In response, several critics commented under the post, questioning, “is he serious?” and even shocked that this was a real plan.
Dr. Githinji Gitahi, who is a global CEO of Amref Health Africa, also criticized the governor’s plans in a tweet, saying, ”Please completely ignore clowning of a major global pandemic taking lives & putting extreme pressure on households,” he wrote. “Dump this the way you would dump your used #COVID19 #mask — never to be recovered! @MOH_Kenya needs to condemn this as this is not an ordinary citizen!”

The World Health Organization (WHO) says that drinking alcohol does not prevent or protect against the coronavirus. In fact, the organization noted that excessive amounts of alcohol could increase the effects of the coronavirus. But, the governor also claimed that the bottle of Hennessy could be used as a hand sanitizer. However, this has been proven to not be effective, as WHO revealed that alcohol-based sanitizers should be “greater than 60 percent ethanol or 70 percent isopropanol in healthcare settings”. Hennessy is only 40% of vol. Alcohol.
According to the BBC, Governor Sonko has been previously accused of “drug trafficking and money laundering,” which he has since denied. Prison authorities also claim he escaped from prison 20 years ago from a maximum security facility.
