As Black History Month draws to a close, Kerry Washington is paying homage to Rosa Parks by recreating her 1955 mugshot.
On Monday, the “American Son” actress shared a black and white side-by-side image featuring her recreated photo and Ms. Parks’ photo. Washington wore a similar plaid suit and rimmed glasses while holding inmate number 7053, the same one held by the civil rights activist in her arrest picture.
“It was Rosa Park’s act of civil disobedience on that bus that sparked a revolution. She took that seat in order to take a stand,” Washington wrote in the lengthy caption honoring Parks, who passed away in 2005 at age 92. Her arrest on December 1st, 1955, for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white woman, sparked massive outrage and civil rights protests.
Washington’s photograph was part of her Black History Month series, #BlackHERStory, highlighting Black women who have played a monumental role in history. Other iconic women that Washington has honored in February include Olympic sprinter Wilma Rudolph and model and beauty mogul Beverly Johnson.
