Brooklyn based singer/songwriter Kevin Garrett, whose critically acclaimed debut EP “Mellow Drama” touched the hearts of many including artists such as Sam Smith and Katy Perry, recently collaborated with the Texas superstar, Beyoncé, for her emotional ‘Lemonade’ introduction, “Pray You Catch Me.”
Garrett exchanged dialogue with Billboard to discuss writing and producing for Queen Bey. “It was a collaborative effort with Beyoncé. It’s an incredibly special song to me because of the way it was written, lyrics first and on a guitar. Once she added her voice and her honesty to the track, it really pushed everything over the top,” Garrett divulged.
The extent of Beyoncé’s work ethic is no secret. She’s very detailed, passionate and particular with her art, “You can’t ever really know what to expect with her, because of the type of incredibly meticulous artist she is,” he explained. “Taking from so many influences and pushing so many boundaries for the sake of yielding specific and meaningful art.”
Beyoncé’s diversity has been conveyed throughout her career, from ‘Crazy in Love’ to ‘Ring the Alarm,’ and from heartbreak to healing, most recently expressed through ‘Lemonade,’ Garret talks about his appreciation of her range and reach.
“Beyoncé is amazing at blending influences in her work, which really makes her albums less genre based and more Beyoncé based.”
The incredibly relatable visual album brought surprise to Garrett when he realized ‘Pray You Catch Me’ was the opener for the project. “I was speechless to hear the song as the first on the visual album,” he remembers. The emotional track introduces the album as well as distrust and pain that will be the force that pushes the entire album.
“That first line [You can taste the dishonesty/It’s all over your breath] is going to stay with people forever.”
