Kentucky Fried Chicken is teaming up with Meals on Wheels to feed seniors that have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Delish reports that from now through May, the fast-food chain will donate one million pieces of chicken, which will then be delivered through the meal delivery nonprofit. KFC made the announcement in a press release last week.
KFC is donating boneless, skinless chicken breast filets to provide the essential protein required by a senior diet. The chicken will be cooked by Meals on Wheels volunteers and then delivered to senior citizens.
Local franchisees have also been allocated a case of chicken per restaurant to cook and distribute to seniors throughout their community. Each local team will get to decide where the chicken is donated; it can be through Meals on Wheels or to a local nursing home or senior center.
Along with the chicken donations, KFC is rewarding Meals on Wheels volunteers for their efforts by giving out 11,000 gift cards. According to the press release, the number was chosen to coincide with the Colonel’s famous 11 Herbs & Spices.
“Seniors have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with social distancing efforts contributing to increased isolation, loneliness, and despair,” Staci Rawls, KFC U.S. Chief Communications Officer, said in the statement. “We want to do our part to help ensure the safety and well-being of older adults during this difficult time, and Meals on Wheels America has the support system in place to reach seniors in need. They are the real champions of this cause, and we’re honored to participate in their heroic efforts.”
