Killer Mike is going to receive the first-ever Change Maker Award at the Billboard Music Awards this week.
NBC announced Monday that the Run The Jewels rapper will be honored for his work as a civil rights activist and social justice leader.
The award is meant to recognize an artist that uses his or her music and platform to make change.
“This award highlights and recognizes the attributes of a true social justice warrior in the field of music who has made exemplary strides to lead the community in positive change-making advocacy,” said Datwon Thomas, the cultural media and consulting producer for the Billboard Music Awards. “In partnership with a diverse committee of colleagues at MRC and our cultural inclusion committee, BLAC, we selected Killer Mike for his contributions to the current movement and culture and his tangible efforts to make national and grassroots change.”
The award show will be hosted by Kelly Clarkson and will be broadcast on October 14 from Los Angeles.
The Grammy award-winner has had a career spanning over 20 years and has used his voice to lead social justice and civil rights movements within the Black community. He’s created opportunities for Black businesses and educated youth about being an entrepreneur and how to be financially responsible.
His last album was originally due to release on June 5 this year, but due to the protests against police brutality, Run the Jewels released it two days early.
“F*** it, why wait. The world is infested with bull**** so here’s something raw to listen to while you deal with it all. We hope it brings you some joy. Stay safe and hopeful out there and thank you for giving 2 friends the chance to be heard and do what they love. With sincere love and gratitude, Jaime + Mike,” the duo said.
