All marriages endure challenges, and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were not the exceptions. After months of speculation, the Skims owner filed for divorce from her Grammy-winning husband.
The couple, who married in 2014, has been separated for months. But, their seven-year marriage took a turn for the worst in 2018.
It all started when Kanye publicly shared his controversial opinions on slavery in a 2018 TMZ interview. As many remember, Kanye said, “slavery was a choice.” A source tells Us Weekly, “They went through a really rough patch in the aftermath of that. Kanye’s ridiculous and outrageous comments completely mortified Kim. It took a lot for them to move past it.”
The next incident came in July 2020 during Kanye’s kick-off bid for the U.S. presidency. While discussing abortion, West broke down and told the world he and Kim considered aborting their now seven-year-old daughter, North West.
This “was the breaking point in their marriage.” Kim always warned him to be careful about mentioned their kid’s names in public.
“There was no turning back for Kim after that,” the source shared. “She was able to brush off things that he said for shock value in the past, but she was in over her head as soon as he brought their children into it. She thought it was utterly unacceptable and freaked out over the thought of North one day reading about it. From there, they were never able to get back to the place they were once in.”
A few days after Kanye’s made his remarks during his kick-off, he went on a Twitter rant accusing Kim of “trying to lock him up under a 5150 psychiatric hold.” He also claimed that he wanted to divorce her for years, alleging she had an affair with rapper Meek Mill.
In December of 2020, “Kanye blew up at Kim, and she was really upset. Things between them don’t seem to have healed since that.”
According to Us, Kim has hired Laura Wasser as her divorce attorney. The two have been working together since March.
