On Easter Sunday, Kanye West opened his intimate Sunday Service to the world and sang praises to the Lord at Coachella. The “Jesus Walks’ singer and his choir, set up atop a hill, dressed in pastel purple as family, friends, and fans watched from below, and fans streamed through a peephole lens.
During the service, West directed his choir through a slew of gospel hits, including his own, and even shared an emotional moment with Kid Cudi, DMX, and Chance the Rapper. However, West’s new “Sunday Service” idea sparked mixed reactions, as some questioned whether or not the services were an alternative church option. Meanwhile, others weren’t convinced West’s intentions were pure, as a few even called out the rapper for using God to win back the black community.
But, according to his wife, Kim Kardashian, the Sunday Services are West’s outlet for healing.
“It’s honestly more like a headline experience for my husband,” Kardashian said earlier this month. “It’s just music; there’s no sermon. It’s definitely something he believes in – Jesus – and there’s a Christian vibe. But there’s no preaching. It’s just a very spiritual Christian experience.”
In fact, Kardashian doubled down on her explanation of the Services in an Instagram post after ‘Ye’s Coachella edition, and commended her husband for executing his vision to start a church.
“Sunday Service was so special to experience here at Coachella especially for my first time here,” Kardashian said. “Kanye started Sunday Service for healing for himself and his close and family and friends. He had this vision of starting a church for a few years, and it was magical seeing everyone else get to experience it.”
“Thank you to everyone who woke up early to spend Easter Sunday with us,” she continued. “It’s a memory we will cherish forever.”
