Flyers promoting the Ku Klux Klan were seen posted in Huntington Beach, California.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the flyers posted around the beach come just one week before “white lives matter” marches are expected to happen around the nation, according to the Orange County Register.
The outlet reports that the flyers have been seen throughout the community. One flyer, in particular, was seen on the south end of 19th street. A resident contacted the police about it at 7.am. on Sunday morning, Huntington Beach Lt. Mendez told the outlet. The flyers feature a drawing of a klansman standing in front of a burning cross with the words “white lives do matter.”
Residents in the area began gathering the flyers as they saw them in the community. Shaun Wallace saw his neighbor holding one of the flyers at around 7:30 a.m., appearing visibly upset. The two found 14 in the area where they were. “It’s really disheartening to see openly racist material in our neighborhood,” Wallace, who was walking his dog when he saw his neighbor, told the Register. “Almost everyone who lives in this area that I’ve shown this to feels the same way.”
Wallace said the racist behavior in his neighborhood is not new. Wallace shared that he has argued with people online who claim “white people” are afraid to “stand up for their heritage because they are afraid of being called a racist” and spew other racist rhetoric. He mentioned that his community is filled with racist people.
“We should own this as a community, not push this issue away,” Wallace told the newspaper.
