Kodak Black is expressing regret over his line about taking a fake Percocet in his hit single “Super Gremlin.” The controversial lyric (“I knew the Perc was fake, but I still ate it/ ‘Cause I’m a gremlin”) has sparked a lot of discussions.
In a video that surfaced on Friday (June 28), Kodak addressed fans during a concert, explaining his mindset while writing the rhyme. “It’s sad, though, bruh, ’cause I’m like, ‘That shit gon’ park in the mind so quick.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, I don’t wanna say this shit, but I know this bitch gonna do it, homie.’ A n-gga don’t play like that, bruh,” he said.
Reflecting on his past, Kodak shared, “When I was in my stage when I was taking Percs, I was torn. I swear to God, I was taking about 100 Percs a day. Averaged about 40 a day. If I was messing with that fake stuff, I would’ve been dead, homie.”
He emphasized to his fans, “Explaining myself now, I don’t want y’all to hear that and think it’s okay to do that stuff, you hear me? Hell no.”
Despite the health risks associated with fake drugs, the lyric didn’t hurt Kodak’s career as “Super Gremlin” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since been certified platinum.
Kodak, 27, opened up about his Percocet addiction on Instagram Live last year, revealing he started taking the pain medication while recovering from being shot in the leg in 2022. “I’ll tell God himself I do Percs and stuff like that, but them was my medicine prescribed to me,” he said. “Even before I got shot and I had got prescribed to them again, I could say that I had started damn abusing [them].”
He also shared that he’s working on getting clean and had spent $350,000 on rehab. “I’m working on myself. I’m working right now, homie,” he continued. “I paid $350,000 and stuff to get clean and get better […] I’ve done went to rehab by myself without the court having to tell me to do that.”
Kodak appears to have kicked his habit and recently said that he’s the “happiest” he’s ever been after becoming sober. “I remember a point in my life when I was chewing a lot of Percs,” he said during a separate IG Live in April. “Bro, I’m proud of myself. I’ve never been this happy in my life, bro. I don’t know where this came from, what the heck going on.”
He added, “I ain’t even going to say I’m anti-Perc. Like, I never took a Perc since I been home. But bro, my dosage so low that I can’t believe it myself. Man, I’m telling y’all, bro.”
Reflecting on his past use, Kodak said, “Before I just went to jail, bro, I was taking… I can talk about this because it’s my testimony. Ain’t no shame in my stuff. I was taking at least 100 Percs. Bro, my average was 40 Percocets. I’m telling y’all this, man, to the point where I look at this stuff and be like, ‘What the heck was wrong with me, bruh?’ I listen to my music and be like, ‘Bro, what the heck, fam?'”
