Kyle Rittenhouse, the Illinois white teen who was found not guilty for fatally shooting two men and wounding another amid the protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has landed himself back in the news.
Rittenhouse, who is now 19, wants the same gun he used the night he killed two people and injured a third back, as well as his other property that was taken when he was arrested by police, the Associated Press reported.
His request to retrieve his property is all too similar to the request of the St. Louis couple who waved their guns at Black Lives Matters protesters during the George Floyd protests of 2020. That couple had their weapons seized by police but then asked for those same guns back.
That same couple attended Rittenhouse’s trial.
Police have had the young man’s gun since Aug. 25th, which was the day he shot three men during protests over the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot by a white police officer.
Mark Richards, Rittenhouse’s attorney, filed a pleading with the Kenosha County Circuit Court asking to return the AR-15 and his client’s clothes that were worn that tragic night and other items.
According to the Kenosha News, Rittenhouse says he wants the gun back to destroy it.
The firearm in question was purchased for Rittenhouse by Dominick Black because Rittenhouse was only 17 and unable to buy a firearm himself legally, The Root reported.
Rittenhouse also requests the court return the ammunition, sling, and magazine from the gun. He also wants his clothing from the night of the shooting, cellphone, face mask, and a $1 bill.
The court scheduled a hearing on the motion on Jan. 28
