The NBA All-Star Reserves are set to be named on Thursday evening and Kyrie Irving’s performance on Wednesday night may have been just what the Australia native needed to secure his spot! The 22 year old starting point guard put up a career high 55 points against the Portland Trailblazers, single-handedly guiding his team to the win.
With star player LeBron James inactive due to a sprained wrist, not many people expected the Cavaliers to take the win as they’ve been pretty stale without him in previous games. Problem is… no one told Kyrie that! He led the Cavs to a 99-94 win, extending their hot winning streak to 8 games.
Irving didn’t score quietly either, he collected his astounding 55 points in a record breaking fashion! He set a franchise record for 3-pointers with 11, edged Allen Iverson’s 54 point Quicken Loans Arena record for points scored, set the Cav’s franchise record for attempted 3’s with 19, and for the cherry on top he set the NBA season high for points in a game, surpassing both Mo Williams and Klay Thompson who each had 52.
Irving’s night for the history books will surely be one to remember! When the smoke cleared he came away with 10-10 made free throws, 11-19 on threes, and with his remarkable 55 points anyone can easily look pass his 47 percent on field goals. Almost perfectly splitting his scoring between the two halves he scored 27 points before the half-time mark and 28 afterwards. And to hone in on the win, Irving accounted for 16 of the Cavaliers final 20 points of the game. His final 2 points would be a clutch pair of free throws but what really proved to be the kill with just under 12 seconds left was Irving draining a walk up three right in the face of Nicholas Batum.
After the game the Cavs rained the point guard with ice and water to celebrate his victorious night as they showered him with praises. But as for the star of the night himself, he just basked in the idea of getting the win with his teammate’s right beside him along the way.
