Kyrie Irving is requesting to be traded from the Brooklyn Nets days before the 2023 NBA trade deadline.
On Friday, CBS Sports’ Bill Reiter confirmed Irving wants to be traded to another team as soon as possible. Irving informed the Nets of his decision and wants to be traded before the February 9th deadline, or he will exit the team in July as a free agent.
According to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Irving’s trade demand comes after the 30-year-old player and the team couldn’t come to an agreement on the contract extension.
The Nets previously offered Irving an extension on his contract along with “guaranteed stipulations.” However, the details of the extension was reportedly “not received well” by Irving’s team and was denied.
In addition, Irving was also holding out on signing the contract extension before entering his final year with the team. However, the Nets did grant Irving permission to search around for other offers but nothing was found. Irving ultimately chose to remain with the Nets with hopes of winning an NBA Championship alongside Kevin Durant.
Irving has not announced his preferred teams he would like to be traded to but has expressed interest in joining the Los Angeles Lakers.
