Lafayette City Court Judge Michelle Odinet has resigned from the bench after being caught on tape using the N-word.
Friday morning, Dane Ciolino– Odinet’s lawyer– filed the disgraced judge’s resignation letter with the Louisiana Supreme Court.
Ciolino said in a statement that “Ms. Odinet understands that this is the end of her public service, but only the beginning of what she must to do to earn the forgiveness of the community.”
Odinet came under fire after a video of a group of people using racial slurs watching an attempted burglary suspect on surveillance footage was released. Though no one can be seen, it was later confirmed Odinet was one of the voices heard using the slur.
Previously, Odinet had taken leave from the bench. She was then suspended pending an investigation by the Louisiana Supreme Court.
As a result of the controversy, the Orleans Parish district attorney ordered a review of any cases she prosecuted while working for the office in the 1990s.
