A Fourth of July celebration turned dangerous when a fireworks explosion hospitalized six people on Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the incident occurred around 9:14 p.m. and involved “unpermitted fireworks” launched from a modified pontoon boat.
ALEA said the boat had been converted into a makeshift fireworks platform. Witnesses told The Outlook that the boat had been firing for several minutes before one explosion went off too low, appearing to ignite the vessel.
Among those injured were William C. Davis, 39, and Aaron L. Kovak, 49, who were airlifted to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. Others injured—Johnathan R. Wilmarth, 43, Joshua A. Husted, 36, and Matthew Davila, 28, were taken to local hospitals. The victims’ current conditions remain unknown.
The Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an investigation into the explosion. ALEA stated they had “no additional information to share at this time.” PEOPLE also reached out to the Fire Marshal’s Office but received no immediate response.
Three medical helicopters responded to transport victims, according to ABC 33-40 and *The Outlook*.
ALEA used the incident to highlight fireworks safety, warning: “Never launch fireworks from boats unless specifically permitted and equipped with proper safety measures,” and emphasized securing setups to avoid misfires caused by wind or movement.
The fireworks show had been part of an annual celebration on Lake Martin. The investigation continues.
