In his highly anticipated memoir, “Darkness to Light,” former NBA superstar Lamar Odom opens up about his struggles with addiction to drugs, sex and alcohol, and how childhood trauma transformed into self-destruction in his adult life.
Odom’s “Darkness to Light” also reveals the former baller’s regrets, the lasting effects of his near-fatal overdose, and how his secret drug habit ultimately led to the end of his seven-year marriage to “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star, Khloe Kardashian.
Although the book chronicled the juicy details of Odom’s life, both good and bad, there was one incident that he regretted revisiting for the book: The Soul Cycle Incident. In that incident, which occurred in 2015, Odom popped up on Khloe at 6:45 am in Beverly Hills and unleashed a verbal attack.
At the time, eye witnesses told TMZ that Odom demanded that she talk to him and even grabbed her arm, as she screamed for him to let her go. Although witnesses threatened to call the police, Odom reportedly responded, “You’re not going to call the cops on Lamar Odom.”
In the book, Odom explained the meetup, which according to him, was organized by Kardashian matriarch, Kris Jenner.
“Kris was only interested in protecting the Kardashian brand, which was an international phenomenon…It was always about her brand. I was nothing to her,” Odom wrote of the time he yearned for Khloe amid their divorce. “Kris called me later that night to tell me that Khloe wanted to speak to me in person the next day in L.A. Khloe had gone dark after her last text, an hour or so before, so I assumed she had fallen asleep.”
“I was high on cocaine, weed, and alcohol,” Odom wrote, as he recalled the moment he flew to L.A. in the middle of the night to speak to his would-be ex-wife. “I was desperate to talk to her. I knew this was my last chance. Kris said Khloe would be at SoulCycle in Beverly Hills at 6 am, and she was right on time. As she walked down the sidewalk dressed in her workout clothes, I jogged across the street to say hello.”
“She stopped in her tracks,” Odom recalled. “Right away I knew something wasn’t right…I was completely confused. I wasn’t even high anymore. I was anxious and agitated, but I had come down from the high. It all felt like a movie I didn’t want to be in.”
“As much as the paparazzi followed me around, invaded my privacy, and made my life a living hell, I was certain of one thing: there was no way they could have known I was going to be at SoulCycle in Beverly Hills at six o’clock in the morning on a Saturday.”
“Well, actually, there was one way,” Odom said. “It had to be Kris,” adding that Khloe had no idea. “Kris knew this was my last chance, but she didn’t want a drug addict in the family. It wasn’t good for business.”
“I was one step closer to rock bottom. One step closer to death,” he wrote.
But despite his initial thoughts about Jenner and the Soul Cycle situation, Odom revealed to Baller Alert that he wishes he’d omitted that one part.
“Kris will always be my family, and sometimes things happen with family members that you can’t even explain,” Odom said of his regret. “She’ll always be my mother, and that’ll always be my family.”
