The James Bond 007 franchise has gone 24 films without a black, let alone female, lead. However, our British sister, actress Lashana Lynch, will change the course of the franchise’s history by becoming the new agent 007.
According to the Daily Mail, her debut is being described as a “popcorn-dropping moment” in the 25th movie that is currently being filmed. An anonymous source told the publication,
“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, ‘Come in 007,’ and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful, and a woman. It’s a popcorn-dropping moment.”
But, to clarify, she is not becoming or replacing James Bond, she is merely taking Bond’s secret agent number after he retires from MI6, the report states. Daniel Craig will still play Bond, and he will still be the old-fashioned, lady seducer who can kick some ass.
However, a source said, “Bond, of course, is sexually attracted to the new female 007 and tries his usual seduction tricks, but is baffled when they don’t work on a brilliant, young black woman who basically rolls her eyes at him and has no interest in jumping into his bed.”
Lashana Lynch previously starred in the blockbuster hit “Captain Marvel,” so she isn’t totally new to the acting scene. Many of her OG fans (and new ones) applauded her casting as the new 007 on Twitter, especially with her being the first black, female agent to lead.
One user tweeted, “Wait, a black woman is playing 007, and the next movie is written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and directed by Cary Fukunaga? is this feeling… excitement and hope about the Bond franchise?”
Another Twitter user wrote, “Y’all thought White People lost their shit over a fictional mermaid ?♀️ wait till they hear Lashana Lynch being the new #007 LOOK BACK AT IT, MITCHES!!!!!”
Twitter user, “Husky Haddish” gave a little Bond black history lesson paying homage to Lynch as well as #GloriaHendry who was the first black Bond Girl and #NaomiHarris who was the first black Money Penny.
Congratulations to the new 007, Lashana Lynch ??
