Latto shut down the rumors that she was shading Nicki Minaj during her recent acceptance speech.
On Wednesday, the 24-year-old rapper was present at the 2023 Billboard Women In Music event located at the Youtube Theater in Los Angeles. While there, Latto performed her single, “Lottery” and was honored with the Powerhouse Award.
During her acceptance speech, the “Big Energy” rapper mentioned the importance of the award and highlighted past recipients.
“Megan Thee Stallion won this award, Doja Cat won this award. It’s crazy because I’m fans of my peers and they’re now my peers,” Latto said. “All the inspiring women who paved the way for me and all the women that there are to come. I’m grateful to be a part of this new wave of female rap and baby, we kickin’ down the door and we ain’t takin’ no for an answer.”
Many people found the speech to be harmless. However, Nicki Minaj fans believed Latto was trying to be shady towards Nicki by purposely not mentioning the “Pink Friday” rapper in her speech. In addition, they also claimed Latto threw shots at fellow rapper Doechii, who mentioned Nicki just moments before Latto took the stage.
“Moments after @iamdoechii gave props to Nicki Minaj and other women who have been honored at Women In Music, @latto gets on stage, follows Doechii speech, & does a whole cheeky smile as she tries to not mention Nicki,” one Twitter user said.
Nevertheless, Latto quickly denied the allegations and posted a clip from the night where she expressed her love for Doechii. She also added a screenshot of the Powerhouse award winners, which proved that Nicki never won the award.
