As the world mourns the death of legendary rapper Nipsey Hussle, his family took the stage at his homegoing ceremony to share their stories of Nipsey’s life.
Nipsey’s Celebration of Life memorial service was held at the Staples Center arena in downtown Los Angeles. In the more than 20,000 seats, Nipsey’s family, friends, and fans joined to reflect and rejoice in the journey that Nipsey lived. One of the first to take a stand was Nipsey’s mother who shared that while she felt her son’s death coming, she felt peace. “I know that we are all divine creatures. We are all divinity within. We don’t need to look to the sky for God; God is within us,” Angelique Smith explained. “I have perfect peace. I’m happy. I am complete. I am strong. And if I can feel this way, so can you.”
Hussle’s brother, Samiel Asghedom, said Nipsey “made the world proud.” “We are all proud of him,” said Asghedom. “He loved everybody and he loved who he grew up with, where he grew up. He just wanted to inspire and always bring something back.”
His significant life-partner, Lauren London also shared her own words, as well as a text message she wrote to Nip while he was sleeping. “I had to write something because I’ve never felt this type of pain before. His soul was majestic. He was the strongest man that I ever knew,” she explained of Hussle, calling him the “greatest” boyfriend. “He was brilliant. He researched everything; completely self-taught and always seeking knowledge.” In her text message she wrote, “I want you to know I feel real joy in my heart when I’m around you. I feel safe around you. Protected. Like a shield over me when you’re around, I am totally myself when I’m with you (which is prob why I’m annoying) because I don’t wear a cool mask anymore lol,” London wrote in a text message to Hussle on Jan. 21. She went on to say Nipsey made her “more of a woman.” “And …. You’re still the coolest guy in the world to me. Still! I love you so much. Unconditionally. My truth is this. I’m never going to give up on you. My loyalty and devotion is to you,” she added.
She ended her statement with “The world just got to see a flash of your brilliance. You were a curious soul who was evolving at a speed that was truly inspiring,” JAY-Z wrote, in part. “The seeds you have planted are already bearing fruit. The outpouring of admiration is testimony to the love and respect you’ve farmed. Sleep well King. The Marathon continues as a line of energy for all of us to consider.”
She ended her statement with, “My pain is for my 2-year-old who won’t probably remember how much his dad loved him. This is something I don’t really understand but Ermias used to say that you can’t possess people, you experience them and I’m so honored and blessed that I got to experience such a man. know everyone is hurting but I’d like to say something to my city of Los Angeles. We know what Nip did to us, we lost an incredible soul. We lost someone very rare to us and we lost a real one. We won’t ever be the same. But in Hussle’s words, “The game is gonna test you, never fold. Stay ten toes down. It’s not on you, it’s in you and what’s in you, they cannot take away and he’s in all of us. To Ermias, the love of my life, you know what it is. Grief is the final act of love. My heart hears you. I feel you everywhere. I’m so grateful that I had you. I love you beyond this earth. And until we meet again, The Marathon Continues.”
