As “Insecure” inches to a close, Issa Rae has revealed that her co-star Jay Ellis almost didn’t make it to season two.
Jay Ellis plays the role of Lawrence, Issa’s longtime boo turned ex-boyfriend on the show. In her latest interview with Entertainment Weekly, she confessed that he was only meant to be on season one. However, his stellar performance quickly skyrocketed him to one of the fan favorites. Issa, the star and creator of “Insecure,” says her co-star brought “humanity” and relatability to television in his role that portrayed “just a regular Black dude.”
“He’s just a dude trying to figure it out, too,” Issa said.
In the final season, fans will get to see Lawrence embark on his fatherhood journey with a former fling, Condolo, played by Christina Elmore while trying to navigate his relationships and career. On the other hand, Issa will be working on restoring her relationship with her best friend, Molly, played by her real-life close friend, Yvonne Orji.
Issa says she only planned for five seasons despite fans pleading for more time with the adorned cast.
“We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience,” she previously told Deadline.
“Insecure” season five will premiere Sunday, October 24th on HBO.
