LeBron James is walking back statements he made stating he would like to play his last season with his son and left the possibility open for a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. James is now reaffirming his commitment to the Los Angeles Lakers.
“I see myself being with the purple and gold as long as I can play,” James said after Friday’s game against the Clippers. “But I also have a goal that if it’s possible — I don’t even know if it’s possible — and if I can play with my son, I would love to do that. Is that something that any man would want one day in life? That’s the coolest thing that could possibly happen. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to be with this franchise.”
James’ son Bronny is eligible for the NBA draft in 2024. The basketball legend’s contract is up with the Lakers after next season. While speaking with The Athletic during All-Star Game weekend, he expressed his desire to close out his career playing alongside his son.
“My last year will be played with my son,” he said. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.”
James also added more context behind his statement that “the door is not closed” on returning to the Cavaliers. Instead of playing with the Cavs, James claims he meant signing a one-day contract with the team to retire with Cleveland.
“I never said I’d see myself playing in a Cavaliers uniform,” James clarified.
