Frankie Beverly was born Howard Stanley Beverly on December 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, where his passion for music first took root. In 1970, he formed what would become one of the most influential bands in the world of soul and funk: Maze. Originally called Raw Soul, the group moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco, where they were introduced to the legendary Marvin Gaye. With Gaye’s support and mentorship, Maze went on to release nine Gold albums, and their music garnered a dedicated and devoted fanbase.
Beverly’s smooth baritone voice and powerful stage presence became the signature sound of Maze, with hits like “Before I Let Go,” “Joy and Pain,” and “Happy Feelin’s” becoming timeless classics.
