No shade, no shade…but you gotta admit these guys look like they’re ready to get on stage and serenade a crowd of screaming girls with their matching leather outfits.
The Seattle Seahawks secondary, nicknamed the Legion of Boom, is responsible for much of the success the team has seen in recent years. Five starting players of the Seahawks defense, safety Kam Chancellor, cornerback Jeremy Lane, cornerback Richard Sherman, safety Earl Thomas, and cornerback Byron Maxwell, had the opportunity to grace the cover of the Super Bowl edition of Sports Illustrated. Led by boisterous cornerback Richard Sherman, the five teammates channeled their inner model and struck a pose for the popular sports magazine. Sherman was actually asked to do a solo cover initially but he requested that the other members of the Seahawks secondary be on the cover with him, a true sign of strong brotherhood. (FYI the cover could only fit five guys, the rest are featured inside.)
The issue includes an interview with the members of the Legion of Boom where they discuss facing ex-Legion-of-Boom-member-turned-New-England-Patriot Brandon Browner in Super Bowl XLIX, which players from the past and present they would want to join the Legion of Boom, their reaction to the crazy NFC Championship game, and their thoughts on Tom Brady and the Patriots.
The issue also features an article written by Richard Sherman himself, where he talks about how he has changed as a person since last year’s Super Bowl victory. He also credits his success on the field to his teammates and talks about the significance of each and every one of them. Sherman then touches on more serious topics, criticizing the NFL for tarnishing the image of his teammate Marshawn Lynch due to his struggles with talking to the media. He also talks about the Eric Garner and Mike Brown situations and says that as an expecting father, his desire is to evoke change by being a good role model to his son and fans everywhere.
“Circumstances dictate where you start,” Sherman writes. “A single mother raised Kam Chancellor to become the man he is today—but each individual determines his course. Where I came from, in Compton, kids were brainwashed into thinking that if they weren’t athletes or rappers or drug dealers they were nothing. My son will understand that he’s in control of his own destiny and that education, work ethic and discipline will guide him to an even better life than I’ve enjoyed. He’ll be the man who makes this world a better place through positive actions and influence.”
I can’t wait to see this group of guys play their hearts out this Sunday. But once the offseason gets here, I fully expect a Legion of Boom music video to drop. Gotta do it for the people…
