The day before Thanksgiving, “Queen & Slim,” is set to hit theaters, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smtih. Created by Lena Waithe, the film follows the story of a new couple, who embark on their first date. But, when a run-in with the cops turns fatal, the two are sent on the ride of their lives in the name of love and self-defense.
In a recent interview with Baller Alert, Waithe opened up about her original screenplay and revealed that the most important takeaway from the film is whatever the audience brings.
“Whatever they bring to it,” Waithe said when asked what she hopes people get out of the film. “They gotta get whatever they bring to it. We made the art, we asked the questions and it’s about having a conversation.”
“I hope it’ll make people see black folks as human beings,” she said, adding that she hopes it brings awareness to police brutality.
As the interview continued, Waithe opened up about her forthcoming projects and the third season of “The Chi,” which she said will consist of a lot of humanity.
