Just one year after a very public divorce, singer LeToya Luckett is ready to jump the broom once again –this time, for the long run.
Earlier this week, the singer shared a special moment with her fans, revealing a big secret she’s been keeping under raps for months – she’s quietly found love again.
“I feel it’s very important to build your foundation first before sharing your relationship with the world,” Luckett told ESSENCE in an exclusive interview, recollecting on her very public past relationship that ended after three months of marriage.
“I felt that it was important to get to know each other without any distractions or any he-said she-said,” Luckett shared. “I wanted to do something different with this relationship because I felt something different about him.
The singer hosted a surprise birthday party for her new man, but to her surprise she received one of the greatest gifts of all. A ring. Although, her fans were shocked to see the mystery man on one knee, Luckett was thrilled that the love of her life wanted to spend the rest of his with her.
But, who is the man that popped the question?
Earlier this year, the singer spoke with Pastor John Gray about her issues with love after her failed relationship. Although she yearned for the right man to start a family with, the pain of her last relationship drowned her. However, Gray told Luckett that her husband was coming.
A few months later, Luckett was introduced to her friend’s boyfriend’s brother, Dallas entrepreneur Tommicus Walker.
Upon meeting him, she was intrigued. “I thought, oh, he sounds amazing – a man of God, a good father – and I trusted [her friend, Nikki Chu] because she’s really gotten to know him over a few years,” Luckett said of her introduction to Walker. “I asked her not to tell him my full name or anything about me,” Luckett said of the moment she gave Chu the okay to give Walker her number. But to Luckett’s surprise the two hit it off.
Walker called her the next day and “immediately the chemistry was there.”
“We started talking and laughing. He’s from Texas just like me,” she said. “Talking to him felt like being home again. We talked for a few weeks and he still didn’t know what I looked like or my full name or anything like that.”
The two talked for weeks, prayed together and studied their faith before Walker flew out with his daughter for their first date. When they met, Walker didn’t immediately recognize who she was. But, once he did – he revealed that “none of that matters.”
“I love that he isn’t in the entertainment business, but yet he still understands me and he’s so supportive,” said Luckett. “He gets me, but he sees Toya. And that’s what I’ve always wanted. I’d say, ‘God, whoever you have for me, I want them to see me. I want them to see my heart. I want them to see me crystal clear in their eyes the way you see me in yours.’ And, he sees me. And there’s no better feeling.”
On Wednesday, Walker popped the question in front of their family and friends and she said yes.
“I’m still overjoyed and bouncing off the walls,” she said. “It’s hard to put into words exactly how I’m feeling right now. It’s just joy – straight up joy.”
She then remembered what Pastor Gray said to her about her husband, and when she revealed the news to Gray, he said “That’s him!”
